Alkiviadis Orfefs Chatzivasileiou was born and raised in Athens. He received his Diploma in Chemical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens in 2013. He subsequently enrolled at MIT as a PhD student and joined the Gregory Stephanopoulos lab in the Spring 2014. In addition to his other duties, he is also the lab’s Environmental Health & Safety Representative. In his spare time he likes to fence (foil), read literature and engage with the graduate student community.
His research involves the engineering of bacteria for the overproduction of a class of value-added known as isoprenoids. His research efforts have included work on the improvement of the MEP pathway as well as the investigation of novel ways for the microbial production of isoprenoids.
