Constantinos (Costas) was born and raised in Athens, Greece. He received his Diploma in Chemical Engineering (equivalent to a Master of Engineering degree) from National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) in 2013. His Diploma thesis received the 2013 Best Diploma thesis Award of the School of Chemical Engineering. After graduation from NTUA, he joined the Industrial Biotechnology & Biocatalysis group at NTUA as a Ph.D. student. In 2018 he successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis and received the Dimitris N. Chorafas Foundation Award 2019 for his research. During his thesis he investigated and improved several strategies to overcome the complexity of plant cell wall using novel microbial biocatalysts in order to efficiently utilize lignocellulosic biomass for biofuels production.
Since January 2019, he joined the Gregory Stephanopoulos lab as a Postdoctoral associate, where he investigates ways of utilizing inexpensive substrates through metabolic engineering of the oleaginous yeast Yarrowia lipolytica to produce high value-added products.
