Rebecca Grekin is a Junior studying Chemical Engineering at MIT. She is also on track to complete a minor in Sustainability and the Environment and a minor in French. She has worked in the Stephanopoulos Lab since February of 2016, and she works on two projects under the supervision of Devin Currie. The first of these focuses on the testing and optimization of a designer bacterial community for the conversion of organic food waste into lactic acid, which is a major component necessary for the creation of Poly-lactic acid (PLA), a biodegradable plastic alternative. The other project focuses on developing de-vulcanization techniques to allow better and more complete rubber recycling as current methods rely on the re-vulcanization of used rubber mixed with virgin rubber, which leads to limitations in the amount of old rubber that can be mixed with virgin rubber due to disruptions in the lattice which weaken the final rubber products.
