Born in Canada, Valerie did her Bachelor’s of Science in Molecular biology and Biotechnology and her Master’s of Applied Science in Chemical Engineering at the University of Waterloo. She completed her PhD in 2016 at the University of Western Ontario were she was a Canadian Alexander Grahman Bell NSERC Doctoral Scholar. Valerie received a  NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship to study at MIT in 2017.

Isoprenoids are a large group of diverse metabolites which include many flavour, scent, pigment, and bioactive molecules in high demand by the cosmetic, food, and pharmaceutical industries. However, many are plant metabolites produced in minute quantities in their native species and due to their high level of complexity, chemical synthesis results in extremely low yields. Microbial systems such as E. coli have been demonstrated a viable commerical alternative for the production of plant-derived isoprenoids. Using metabolic engineering in combination with bioprocess development we strive to increase the production of taxol and other valuable isoprenoids.
